From early mornings woken by blasts of Wham! echoing through the cabins, to evenings spent around a camp fire, the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Kincumber was one to remember.

At Australian Refugee Volunteers (ARV), we believe that connection is one of the most powerful forces for change and it starts with our volunteers, people like you.

For over a decade, ARV has brought together volunteers from all walks of life to create safe, joyful, and empowering experiences for children and young people from refugee and asylum-seeker backgrounds. Through camps, day programs, and activities, we help young people build confidence and belonging.

A big thank you to Beth and the wonderful team at Great Aussie Bush Camps who went above and beyond to create a truly memorable camp experience for campers and volunteers alike.

Camp highlights we’ll never forget

💃 A talent quest turned dance party

Who knew “Baby Shark” and the Chicken Dance could unite a room so completely? With some expert hosting by Beth from Great Aussie Bush Camps, The Dabke and Chobi brought unstoppable joy and a few surprise dance moves too getting everyone in the room to their feet.

🎶 Music that moved us

From acoustic strumming to spontaneous drumming, volunteers and campers alike filled the camp with rhythm and laughter.

🎭 The magic of theatre

Our friends at Mad Cow Theatre helped bring out the confidence and bravery of even the quietest camper leading to incredible performances in our campers, culminating in a hilarious and heartfelt rendition of Snow White complete with a glowing red “POI-sonious” apple performed at our Talent Quest.

🔥 Campfire moments

Evenings spent comparing different methods of perfecting damper cooking (of which there wasn't one - though one came close) and learning that maple syrup and cinnamon sugar can fix almost anything.

🧘 Acroyoga, Poi and patience

Volunteers guided campers through balance and movement with calm encouragement by Kevin and MJ and joined in the fun themselves.

🎯 Archery and adventure

From sassy moves to steady aim, archery and pioneering challenges had everyone cheering each other on. Let’s just say, there’s a new kind of style to hitting bullseyes.

🧗 High ropes and giant swings

Fear was met with courage, and courage turned into celebration, thanks to the support of campers and volunteers alike, offering encouragement, support and steady hands.

The spirit that makes ARV shine

Our volunteers powered through long days and some long nights - but reminded us that camp isn’t just about activities, it’s about showing up for others.

Because of our volunteers, our campers tried new things, found their voice, and felt seen and supported. They created a space where everyone belonged.

Want to be part of the next one?

If this sounds like the kind of magic you want to be part of we’d love to have you join us. Volunteering with ARV isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about sharing connection, joy, and hope with some young people who could use a bit more of it.
