For children in our programs, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is one of the most anticipated events of the year. It is a day full of excitement, fun and unforgettable moments, and this year was no exception.

On Saturday, we ran two separate Easter Show outings, with 40 young people attending across both events. We were also delighted to welcome four children attending one of our visiting programs for the first time. For some, it was simply the “best day ever.” Another child gave it “10 thumbs up out of 5” .

Experiences like this show why volunteering in Sydney matters so much. When people volunteer with children, they help create safe, joyful opportunities for kids to try new things, build happy memories and feel part of something special.

The day had something for everyone. The morning group made the most of shorter lines and enjoyed rides with hardly any waiting, while the evening group took in the fireworks, carnival lights and all the atmosphere that makes the Easter Show so magical after dark. Across both outings, the children threw themselves into the fun - from roller coasters and swings to the haunted house, show bags and carnival food (Freshly squeezed Lemonade, Rainbow Cheese Toasties and Fairy-floss and Feta Sushi anyone?).

A big effort from volunteers across Sydney

Of course, a day like this does not happen on its own.

Our volunteers put in an enormous effort behind the scenes to make sure the children could simply enjoy the experience. From organising transport and packing snacks to supporting the children throughout the day, the work was constant and full of care. Every volunteer played a part, and every effort mattered.

We especially want to acknowledge the volunteers who helped with pick-up and transport. That support is so appreciated. It is a vital part of the day, helping children get where they need to be safely and giving families peace of mind.

There were also moments that called for patience and teamwork. A technology issue with ticketing could have easily derailed the day, but our volunteers pulled together, stayed calm and worked through it as a team. Their focus stayed firmly on making sure the children still had a wonderful time, and that spirit of stepping up for one another is a big part of what makes community volunteering so powerful.

After a huge day of rides, laughter and more than a little sugar, pizza and wraps from Ooshman in Concord were a welcome finish.

When people think about volunteering with children in Sydney, they may picture the big moments, the rides, the fireworks, the smiles and the excitement. But these days are also made possible by the quieter acts of care: planning, driving, packing, supervising, solving problems and making sure children feel safe and supported from start to finish.

That is what our volunteers gave so generously on Saturday.

The Easter Show continues to be one of the highlights of our year, and it is easy to see why. For the children, it is a day of joy, adventure and pure fun. For our volunteers, it is a chance to help make those moments possible. We are already looking forward to continuing this much-loved tradition next year.

To everyone who helped make the day happen, thank you. Your time, teamwork and care helped create a day the children will be talking about for a long time to come.
