Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Volunteering with ARV

Who can volunteer with ARV?
Anyone over the age of 18, has a current Working with Children Check, who is enthusiastic about supporting refugee children and teenagers is welcome. We look for volunteers who can commit time, bring energy, and act as positive role models. Volunteers with a drivers' licence and a vehicle who are comfortable driving kids and teens between events are always required.

Do I need prior experience to volunteer?
No prior experience is required. Training and orientation are provided. We welcome people from all backgrounds, whether you’ve volunteered before or this is your first time.
What type of commitment is expected from volunteers?
Our programs run on weekends and during school holidays. Ideally, we look for volunteers who can commit regularly (e.g., once a term) to build strong connections with participants.
What does a volunteer actually do?
Volunteers supervise and mentor children and teens during camps and day activities, run games, help with meals, encourage participation, and most importantly offer friendship and support.
Do volunteers need a Working With Children Check (WWCC)?
Yes. All volunteers must hold a valid Working With Children Check. This ensures the safety of the children and complies with legal requirements.
Are there costs involved in volunteering?
We try to keep personal costs minimal.
Will I receive training?
Yes. Volunteers attend an induction covering child safety, cultural awareness, first aid basics, and program expectations before participating.
What kind of support will I get as a volunteer?
You’ll be supported by team leaders and experienced volunteers. Many of our programs run with mixed teams of new and returning volunteers to ensure guidance and support.
Can I bring a friend or family member to volunteer with me?
Yes, as long as they also go through the volunteer application process, including WWCC and induction.
How do I apply to volunteer?
Simply fill in the online application form on our website, and we’ll be in touch with next steps.

Participating in ARV Programs

Who can participate in ARV camps and activities?
Our programs are open to children and teenagers from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, generally between 6–18 years old.

What kind of activities are offered?
We run fun, safe, and supportive activities such as camps, sports, arts, excursions, team games, and outdoor adventures.

Is there a cost to attend?
Participation is free. Costs are covered by fundraising and donations. Families should not worry about fees being a barrier.

How do I register my child?
Families can fill out a registration form (shared by ARV or via community organisations) and provide consent and medical information forms.

What support is available for children with special needs?
We aim to be inclusive. Please let us know about any medical conditions, allergies, or accessibility needs. Our volunteers and staff will work with you to ensure your child feels supported.

Who looks after the children at camp?
All participants are supervised by trained volunteers who have completed child safety checks. There are also team leaders on-site to oversee the program.

What if my child has never been on a camp before?
That’s okay! Many participants are new to camp experiences. Our volunteers are trained to support kids who may feel shy, anxious, or homesick.

What should my child bring to camp?
A packing list will be provided before each camp. Usually this includes clothes, toiletries, bedding, and any prescribed medications.

Can parents/guardians attend?
ARV camps are designed for children and teens to build independence and confidence in a safe environment. Parents don’t attend, but they can contact team leaders if needed.

How can families stay updated?
We keep in touch via email, WhatsApp groups, and direct phone calls. Families will receive schedules, reminders, and updates before and during activities.
